Public sector jobs in Bournemouth

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole form one council area, so the main local government employer is BCP Council, set up in 2019 when the three towns’ councils merged. Health jobs come from University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Royal Bournemouth and Poole hospitals, and Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust. Schools, Dorset Police and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service account for most of the rest.

BCP Council

As a unitary authority, BCP Council runs social care, children’s services, education support, housing, planning, waste, highways, libraries and the seafront across all three towns. It is one of the larger councils on the south coast by population. Most jobs are on the NJC pay spine, starting at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026 and reaching £56,293 at SCP 43.

The seafront and leisure services bring seasonal work that most councils do not have, from beach and seafront operations to lifeguarding and events. Seasonal contracts are usually fixed-term or casual, and you have the same rights to holiday pay as permanent staff, worked out in proportion to the time you work. Leisure centre lifeguard jobs covers the qualification lifeguards need.

Hospitals across the conurbation

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust was formed in 2020 from the merger of the Bournemouth and Christchurch and Poole hospital trusts. The trust has been reorganising its services so that the Royal Bournemouth Hospital handles emergency and major planned care and Poole Hospital focuses on planned care, which affects where many jobs are based. Christchurch Hospital also remains part of the trust.

Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, community nursing and community hospital services across the county, and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust handles 999 calls. All three pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026: band 2 at £25,272, band 3 from £25,760 to £27,476, band 4 from £28,392 to £31,157 and band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043.

Shift pay and bank work

A large share of hospital and ambulance work in Bournemouth is shift-based, and a lot of staff top up their basic pay. Agenda for Change pays unsocial hours enhancements as a percentage of basic pay for work in the evenings, at night, at weekends and on bank holidays, with higher percentages in the lower bands; NHS unsocial hours enhancements has the rates. Both local trusts run staff banks, which let you pick up extra shifts on top of your contract or work flexibly without a permanent post. NHS bank work explains how bank pay and holiday work.

Full-time NHS staff start with 27 days’ annual leave plus 8 public holidays, rising to 29 days after 5 years and 33 after 10 years of NHS service. Council staff on Green Book terms get at least 23 days plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years. Both are well above the statutory 5.6 weeks.

Police and fire

Dorset Police covers Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the rest of Dorset. A new constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, reaching £52,015 at the top of the scale. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was formed by combining two county services. Wholetime firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026, and many rural stations rely on on-call firefighters.

Schools and colleges

BCP has a mix of maintained schools and academies, plus grammar schools in Bournemouth and Poole. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, and maintained schools pay the new rates, backdated, once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff are usually on the NJC spine and paid term-time only. School jobs are on Teaching Vacancies and trust websites, and BCP Council advertises some school support posts on its own site.

Southampton is about 40 minutes away by train, with a university hospital, a large council and the port. Public sector jobs in Southampton covers those employers if you are looking further east.
