Public sector jobs in Northampton
Since Northamptonshire County Council was abolished in 2021, the main local government employer in Northampton has been West Northamptonshire Council, a unitary authority covering the town, Daventry and South Northamptonshire. Children’s social care is run separately by Northamptonshire Children’s Trust. Health jobs come mainly from Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and the county’s police and fire services are run from the area too.
Councils and the children’s trust
The 2021 reorganisation split the old county into two unitary councils. West Northamptonshire Council covers Northampton and the west of the county; North Northamptonshire Council covers Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough and the east. Each runs adult social care, education support, housing, planning, waste and highways in its own area. If you live in Northampton, a West Northamptonshire job is the obvious one to look for, but North Northamptonshire posts in Wellingborough are within reach.
Northamptonshire Children’s Trust delivers children’s social care for both councils. It is owned by the councils and recruits social workers, family support workers, independent reviewing officers and admin staff. Pay and terms are set out on its adverts; how to become a children’s social worker covers the qualifications needed.
Council posts are on the NJC pay spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026.
Hospitals and community health
Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust runs the town’s acute hospital and works as a group with Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, under the name University Hospitals of Northamptonshire. Some senior and corporate roles cover both hospitals. Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, community nursing and therapy services across the county. East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust handles 999 calls.
All pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026: band 3 from £25,760 to £27,476, band 4 from £28,392 to £31,157, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117. Most vacancies are on NHS Jobs.
What a school support job really pays
School support jobs are popular in Northampton because they fit around children, but the salary on the advert is often a full-time, full-year figure that you will not receive. Most teaching assistants are paid term-time only and for fewer than 37 hours a week.
Under the NJC’s advisory model, you are paid for the weeks you work plus a share of holiday, and the total is shown as a percentage of the full-time salary. For a hypothetical role working 39 weeks a year with a 36-day leave comparator, that comes to 86.778 per cent. Here is what that means at three spine points, assuming 37 hours a week:
| Spine point | Full-time salary from 1 April 2026 | Term-time only at 86.778% |
|---|---|---|
| SCP 5 | £26,427 | £22,933 |
| SCP 8 | £27,709 | £24,045 |
| SCP 12 | £29,542 | £25,636 |
Work fewer hours and the figure drops further in proportion. Schools and trusts do not all use exactly the same model, so ask for the actual annual salary before you accept. How term-time-only pay is calculated walks through the sums, and how to become a teaching assistant covers the job itself.
Teachers in Northampton start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, outside London, once the 2026 pay document is in force for maintained schools. Many schools in the town are academies in multi-academy trusts.
Police and fire
Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service are both overseen by the county’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner. A new constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026. Firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. Both recruit civilian staff for control rooms, IT, HR and finance, and some support functions are shared between the two services.
Milton Keynes is about 20 minutes away by train and has its own hospital, council and fast-growing schools. Public sector jobs in Milton Keynes covers those employers.
