Public sector jobs in Sunderland

In Sunderland the NHS and the city council account for most public sector vacancies. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust runs Sunderland Royal Hospital, Sunderland City Council covers services across the city including Washington and Houghton, and schools, police and fire add the rest. Starting pay is set nationally: £25,272 for NHS band 2 and £25,614 at the bottom of the council pay spine from April 2026.

Starting pay compared with the private sector

For entry-level work, public sector pay in Sunderland sits above the legal minimum. The National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026. NHS band 2, at £25,272 a year for a full-time 37.5-hour week, works out at a little under £13 an hour, and the bottom of the council spine is about £13.28 an hour. The voluntary Real Living Wage, announced on 15 October 2026, is £14.10, which is higher than both. Public employers also add paid holiday above the statutory minimum, occupational sick pay and a defined benefit pension, which many private employers do not.

Where that leaves you depends on the job you would otherwise do. The Real Living Wage vs the National Living Wage covers the difference between the two rates.

The hospital trust

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust was formed by the merger of the Sunderland and South Tyneside trusts. Sunderland Royal Hospital is its main site, with an emergency department, and the trust also runs South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields and community services. Some roles involve moving between the two hospitals, so read the base and travel expectations on the advert.

Mental health services in the area are provided by Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, and North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust covers 999 and 111 calls. All three pay Agenda for Change rates for England. Band 3, a common grade for senior healthcare assistants and admin staff, runs from £25,760 to £27,476 from 1 April 2026; NHS band 3 pay and jobs lists the roles at that level.

Many hospital roles need no degree: porters, domestics, healthcare assistants, ward clerks, catering staff and phlebotomists. NHS jobs you can get without a degree explains what employers look for.

Sunderland City Council

The council is a metropolitan borough council, so it handles adult social care, children’s services, housing support, waste, highways, parks and leisure for the whole city. Roles are on the NJC pay spine from SCP 3 (£25,614 from 1 April 2026), and the council grades each job to a range of spine points. It is part of the North East Combined Authority, which has a mayor and staff working on transport, skills and investment across the region.

Police and fire

Northumbria Police covers Sunderland, Newcastle, Northumberland and the rest of Tyne and Wear. A newly appointed constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015 at the top of the scale. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service pays national rates: £31,539 for a firefighter in development and £40,358 once competent, from 1 July 2026. Both recruit civilian staff too, including control room operators and admin teams.

Schools

Sunderland has a large number of academies, many in multi-academy trusts that run schools across the North East, as well as council-maintained schools. Teacher pay outside London starts at £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the award accepted in July 2026. The pay document was still in draft in October 2026, so maintained schools will apply the new rates with backdating once it is in force.

Teaching assistants, lunchtime supervisors and other support staff are usually on the NJC spine but paid only for the weeks they work plus holiday, so the salary they receive is lower than the full-time figure quoted. How term-time-only pay is calculated shows the method. School vacancies are listed on Teaching Vacancies, the council’s site and individual trust websites.

Newcastle is around half an hour away on the Metro and has two large hospital trusts and several national offices. Public sector jobs in Newcastle upon Tyne covers what is there.
